What just happened is very significant since it takes a lot of political will to defy the West like Azerbaijan just did, for which it deserves praise from all sincere multipolar supporters, who should encourage its membership in BRICS.

The Azerbaijani delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) announced that it’ll cease engagement with that body following the hostile resolution that it just passed. PACE criticized Azerbaijan’s domestic socio-political affairs and repeated groundless allegations of ethnic cleansing, which prompted the delegation to accuse them of “Political corruption, discrimination, ethnic and religious hatred, double standards, arrogance, (and) chauvinism”.

Azerbaijan’s ties with the West entered into crisis following the successful completion of its one-day anti-terrorist operation in September, which liberated the rest of previously Armenian-occupied Karabakh. The powerful Armenian diaspora lobby immediately leveraged all their agents of influence to convince Western policymakers to abandon their regional balancing act in favor of pivoting towards Armenia at Azerbaijan’s expense.

This took the form of provocative statements by American and European officials, the waging of information warfare against Azerbaijan via a partially US Government-funded operation that was busted in November, Washington’s religious blacklisting of Azerbaijan, and PACE’s latest resolution. As this was happening, Armenia began to cede its national security to NATO and further ruin its ties with Russia, all while reportedly passing along Indian shells to Ukraine without Delhi’s permission at Washington’s behest.

All the while, Azerbaijan accelerated its multipolar pivot by comprehensively strengthening relations with Russia, pioneering a new corridor through northern Iran, and continuing to facilitate Chinese-Turkish/European trade via its irreplaceable transit role in the center of the Middle Corridor. As relations with the West deteriorate due to the latter’s unilateral hostility, which is largely influenced by the pernicious efforts of the Armenian diaspora lobby, Azerbaijan might soon consider BRICS membership.

Its excellent relations with Russia, China, and Iran, particularly in the geo-economic dimension with respect to facilitating the aforementioned Middle Corridor and the North-South Transport Corridor, make this a no-brainer. Azerbaijan’s objective national interests are served by taking maximum advantage of its strategic position at the intersection of these complementary Eurasian connectivity megaprojects by exploring BRICS membership or partner status to better coordinate related policies.

By contrast, clinging to hopes that ties with the West will improve despite those countries unilaterally worsening them through their unprovoked hostility since September would erode Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and suggest that it lacks any self-respect, which is against its objective national interests. Therein lies the reason why its parliamentary delegation announced that they’ll cease engaging with PACE following that group’s latest resolution since Azerbaijan is a self-respecting sovereign state.

Some members of the Alt-Media Community (AMC) hate this country due to their partisan stance towards the recently resolved Karabakh Conflict, which is their personal right to hold but nevertheless clouds their judgement about Azerbaijan. Instead of acknowledging the sovereign exercise of self-respect inherent in its decision to cease engagement with PACE, they turn a blind eye to it since this development inconveniently contradicts their claims about it being a Turkish puppet state or whatever.

Observers should pay attention to which of those AMC influencers who used to regularly inform their audience about this former conflict don’t tell them about this latest move or spin it as a “rogue” action since that’ll prove that they’re just “activists” masquerading as analysts. What just happened is very significant since it takes a lot of political will to defy the West like Azerbaijan just did, for which it deserves praise from all sincere multipolar supporters, who should encourage its membership in BRICS.
