After Soledar, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s troops eye Bakhmut in Donetsk. The Russian military says that its assault teams and paratrooper units were having success in the direction of the northern outskirts of Bakhmut.

Earlier, Moscow-backed separatists in Donetsk claimed “Bakhmut was close to liberation.” Since the summer, Russia has been pounding Bakhmut, a city of 70,000 people. Bakhmut is an essential target for Russian forces as it will open a route to Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, the last two major Ukrainian cities in the Donetsk region.
