Russia has started test-flying the first new Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack supersonic strategic bomber.



However, this first airframe will primarily be used as a flight sciences test aircraft it is not a fully equipped mission-capable strategic bomber. Moreover, this particular airframe was likely assembled from parts that were originally built during the Soviet era.

The Tupolev Tu-160 (NATO reporting name: Blackjack) is a Soviet supersonic, variable-sweep wing heavy strategic bomber. It is the largest and heaviest Mach 2+ supersonic military aircraft ever built and is the largest and heaviest variable-sweep wing airplane ever flown.

The Tu-160 was designed to fly at high subsonic speeds at extremely high altitudes to avoid detection by radar, and to carry nuclear weapons over long distances. The aircraft is capable of carrying up to 40,000 kg of weapons, including nuclear missiles, conventional bombs, and cruise missiles. The Tu-160 has a crew of four and is powered by four after-burning turbofan engines. It is the world’s largest combat aircraft and is the largest and heaviest bomber in service.
