Russia is taking the fighting in Ukraine to a new stage. This is evidenced not only by the personnel changes adopted by the Ministry of Defense but also by the adjustment of the very structure of command and control of the Russian grouping of troops. What kind of changes are we talking about, and how will they affect the course of hostilities in Ukraine? The day before, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu appointed Chief of the General Staff General of the Army Valery Gerasimov commander of Joint Group of Russian Forces in Ukraine.

At the same time, the commander-in-chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, General of the Army Sergei Surovikin, the commander-in-chief of the Ground Forces, General of the Army Oleg Salyukov, and the Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Colonel General Alexei Kim, were appointed deputies of the new commander of the Joint Group of Russian Forces in Ukraine.
