Turkey opposes the entry of new military vessels into the Black Sea and the proliferation of armed conflicts in the region, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday.

“Ankara opposes the proliferation of wars in the region and against the entry of new military vessels into the Black Sea,” Cavusoglu was quoted by Turkish news agency Anadolu as saying.

Turkey strictly complies with the Montreux Convention, the Turkish foreign minister added.

The top diplomat also said that Ankara had called and continued to call on parties to the Ukrainian conflict to establish contacts.

The Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits of 1936 ensures the freedom of passage through Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits for merchant ships both in times of peace and war. The document limits the period of stay in the Black Sea of warships of non-Black Sea states to three weeks. In emergency situations, Turkey has the right to prohibit or restrict the passage of military ships through the straits.

The Turkish side strictly follows the Montreux Convention regulating navigation in the Black Sea straits and has not allowed any warships into the Black Sea since the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis, the country’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

“Turkey is against the escalation of wars in the region and the entry of new warships into the Black Sea. We strictly adhere to the requirements of the Montreux Convention,” the TRT TV channel quoted the top diplomat as saying on Wednesday.

Turkish authorities have repeatedly stated that they have not allowed a single warship to enter the Black Sea since the beginning of the special military operation in Ukraine, citing the right granted to them under the Montreux Convention. Last March, Turkey officially informed Russia and Ukraine that it would apply Article 19 of the convention banning the passage of warships through the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus.
