Israel launched a series of strikes on military targets in southern Iran early on Saturday morning, in retaliation for Iran’s missile attack on Israel last month, which killed one person.
“In response to months of continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against the State of Israel—right now the Israel Defense Forces are conducting precise strikes on military targets in Iran,” Israel’s military said in a statement announcing the attack.
The Israeli military has now said the strikes achieved their objectives and are over. Despite a warning not to respond, the Iranians have vowed to make a “proportional response.”

The targets of the latest Israeli strikes were facilities for the manufacture of missiles and surface-to-air-missile sites.
There were no strikes on energy infrastructure or Iran’s nuclear facilities. President Biden has warned that the US would not support a strike on Iran’s nuclear sites or its oil fields.
The US was warned in advance of the attack, and has since said that the “targeted and proportional strikes” should be the end of direct hostilities between Israel and Iran.
Israel also appears to have targeted sites in central and southern Syria as part of the attack, but did not confirm this.
In recent weeks, the US has increased its support for Israel’s defence against its enemies in the region, including providing an advanced THAAD anti-missile defence system, with 100 US soldiers to operate it.
