Russia’s defence minister said Wednesday the country’s military must be expanded from 1 million troops to 1.5 million amid the special operation in Ukraine.

Sergei Shoigu said the number should include 695,000 volunteer contract soldiers. He did not say when the military plans to reach the increased strength.
