South Africa is set to welcome a Russian naval task force to its shores, despite criticism from some quarters. The Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet is scheduled to make a port call in Simon’s Town, a naval base located about 50km south of Cape Town, as part of a training exercise.



Operation Mosi, which means smoke, will take place from Feb. 17 to Feb. 26. South Africa’s reluctance to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its decision to allow sanctioned Russian vessels to dock at its ports have already ramped up tensions with the US, UK and European Union who are backing Ukraine in the conflict.
