France refuses to withdraw its military from Niger

France has no plans to withdraw the military from Niger, where a coup d’état took place. The refusal was announced by French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, Franceinfo reports.
“The possible departure of French soldiers in Niger is also not on the agenda. All the efforts of the international community are aimed at forcing the junta to abandon its dangerous adventure, which is detrimental to Niger and the region,” the diplomat said.

She recalled that the military is there “at the request of the legitimate authorities of the country, on the basis of agreements signed with the legitimate authorities of this country on assistance in the fight against terrorism.”
Earlier, rebels in Niger terminated some military cooperation agreements with France, which could radically change the fight against Islamist insurgents in the region. It is noted that France has up to 1,5 thousand troops in Niger.
