Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that payment for Russian natural gas should be undertaken in rubles after after a freeze on Russia’s assets by foreign nations. The measure aims at so-call “unfriendly countries” that Moscow listed previously, including US, UK, and all EU members.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on the same day that EU plans to significantly reduce gas imports from Russia and try to find a new alternative.
The French energy giant TotalEnergies announced to phase out Russian oil by the end of year, but it still needs Russian gas because they don’t have a proper replacement. The CEO of TotalEnergies insists the ban on Russian gas will affect European economy.
